One of the joys of the past couple of years has been helping George. Let me explain (I'll give you the short version): George decided to do 'Teach First' after leaving Uni and was given a challenging school on the outskirts of Manchester in which to start. St Anne's had a neglected garden and, despite no real gardening experience, George decided to start a gardening club. He asked me to help and I was thrilled to be just a small part of it. Armed with a list of suitable plants and veggies, a trowel, compost and some pots, George transformed not only the garden but outlook of children who joined his club. I was privileged to visit St Ann's and invited to talk to the children and help a little in the garden itself. It is named after George and his greatly adored and hugely missed grandmother. Who, incidentally, would have been extremely proud of him.
Having qualified as a teacher, George moved on last year and is now teaching Science at Ada Lovelace CofE School in Ealing, London and has, this term, started a new gardening club. He has been given a plot of redundant ground and we set about starting the process of transforming it into a garden. Help has come from all directions (the Headmaster, staff and parents) and, over half term, we built the beginnings - raised beds. Oh and shovelled 10 tonnes of earth!
We have wheelbarrows, some seeds have already been sown and we await the new shed.
We shall follow George on this journey, helping, giving advice and cheering him on as he inspires more young people discover the love of all things growing.
